Why does zinc granules often appear to have a white powder on their surface?

It's been oxidized by the air. Hey - maybe it could be Zn3N2 (zinc nitride) since nitrogen is more prevalent in the air - don't know the color of Zn3N2, might be both.Why does zinc granules often appear to have a white powder on their surface?
Zinc reacts with the air and forms a coating of zinc oxide on its surface
